Get a Coach
A mentor stands at your goal and shows you how to get there.
A couple of years ago Inc. Magazine interviewed Scott Cook, the founder of Intuit - the Quick Books company. Here are excerpts of three rules he has about running a business.
"One, behave humbly. Be humble about your importance, about how many answers you know and about how much you
don't know (which is always more than you think)
"Two, get a coach. Because people aren't going to tell the boss what you need to know about yourself.
"And lastly," Cook says, "realize that to a scary degree a company grows to reflect its founder.
About #2 - "Get a coach. Because people
aren't going to tell the boss what you need to know about yourself. Bad news never travels all the way up. So get a coach who helps you, and criticizes, and makes demands, and holds you accountable. Don't you think there's a reason that even superhuman athletes, the best in the world, always have coaches?
Yet how many CEOs do? I occasionally had a coach [Peter Wendell, head of Sierra Ventures] and made some of my best decisions when using him."
One thing about his last idea is that the reason for having a coach is to make sure that the scary things -#3 - in your
company - your ideas and business work does not slow the growth of others and yourself. The other thing is how many "best decisions" do you need from a coach to make life more fun?
During the past ten years some of my customers have been lawyers and MBAs running companies. They have been people
with masters degrees in their chosen field. At one large hotel chain - during a management retreat, the senior manager, while working, on an exercise about trust, asked this question, "Why haven't we learned this before?" Not everything you learn in business school or college
will be applied to your business or personal life. Even great companies need mentors. People with a fresh outlook of their life.
Again - ponder this idea by Scott Cook, Don't you think there's a reason that even superhuman athletes, the best in the world, always have
coaches? If you wish to grow in your business and personal life it may be time for you to follow the advice of a successful business leader. Read more about what is a coach.
Here is a recent comment by one of my customers -

"I am so glad our paths have crossed. Your help with conversations for action - nouns and verbs - has been a big help in my new position as VP of the company. I even shared the idea with my mother, who used it to help one of her students. This has been a breakthrough for
me. I look forward to using the mailing campaign and the postcards to enhance our sales efforts." Jana Q.
